The Order of Melchisedek

Peter Paul Rubens - The Meeting of Abraham and Melchisedek - WGA20438

There is a parallel between Melchizedek and Christ. Melchizedek was a forerunner of Christ.

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; (KJV) Hebrews 7:1

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. Genesis 14:18

Melchizedek is introduced in the Old Testament and reaffirmed in the New Testament.

For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: Hebrews 5:1

So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. Hebrews 5:5

As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:6

Jesus is our high priest “that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.”  Jesus was the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world. Jesus himself became the sacrifice for sin.

The Seed of Abraham

Abraham bouwt een altaar, RP-P-OB-44.874

God promised the land of Israel to Abraham and his seed.

And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. Genesis 12:7

The fact is, Abraham had two sons. One was a son through a slave. One was a son through his wife, Sarah. The son of the promise was the son through his wife. That son’s name was Isaac.

Fast forward through the ages and there was the seed of Abraham who was promised. The life of Abraham and Isaac contains a type and shadow of Jesus. Suffice it to say, Jesus was the seed promised of Abraham.

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.  Galatians 3:16

Very early, God had Jesus in mind. He had him in mind when he talked to Adam and Eve that a woman would come whose seed would crush the head of the serpent. Again, God had Jesus in mind when he talked to Abraham about a seed. Jesus became the seed that God the Father sowed to save the world.
